"Where treatment rooms were occupied for 8 hours on paper, in practice this turned out to be only 2 hours."

Erik Boswinkel director of Real Estate at Roessingh

Data for substantiation of housing issues

Housing issues regularly play tricks on the Roessingh rehabilitation center. The various treatment teams have their own treatment rooms. After signals about a shortage of space and the need for expansion of a number of disciplines, the occupancy rate and utilization were mapped using data from Beyond Eyes sensors. What turned out? In practice, the use of the spaces turned out to be less frequent than was assumed.

The medical specialists of the rehabilitation center teach patients to function (again) independently in society with their limitations as well as possible. “Our rehabilitation center has a number of care buildings for this purpose, spread over our site. It employs specialists from various disciplines, who have access to their own, specifically designed spaces. Think of orthopedic rehabilitation, treatment after brain injury or treatment rooms for children. The practitioners would like to keep or expand these in the long term because they experience a shortage, ”says Erik Boswinkel, director / manager of Real Estate at Roessingh. “This led to a lot of discussion about the actual use, because from the facilities we suspected that it was different.

Substantiation with data instead of assumptions

After orientation, Boswinkel teamed up with Beyond Eyes. The BE Equipped service installed 100 sensors at the end of 2019, and more than 150 have now been ordered. Boswinkel: “The sensors were used per room and quickly provided anonymous insight into the use. For example, it turned out that certain therapy rooms are available for a discipline for a whole day, but are only used for 2 hours. Those are expensive square meters. We also mapped kitchen use for two disciplines. There was a need to build an extra kitchen, but the data from the sensors showed that one kitchen was hardly used. ” The yields of the sensors are therefore significant. “The discussions have been nipped in the bud thanks to hard usage figures. One of the conclusions is that a number of therapy rooms can be set up in a multidisciplinary way. That saves a lot of costs and is more sustainable, ”says Boswinkel. "In the future, I also see it happening that we will expand BE Equipped with a planning tool, so that practitioners have insight into the availability of rooms and can reserve them in advance in time blocks."

BE Vital for safe air treatment

In addition to insight into occupancy and utilization, comfort sensors provide insight into the temperature, humidity and CO₂ content in the therapy rooms, so that these can be adjusted immediately at elevated values. Boswinkel: “Good and safe, so separate air treatment, is of course a requirement in healthcare. The BE Vital sensors have been hanging since 2019, but now, at the time of COVID-19, they have fully paid off. If the standard is exceeded, an alarm is triggered and the manager receives an email. ”

All in all, Boswinkel is satisfied with the results and cooperation with Beyond Eyes: “The insight we now have into the use of the spaces has convinced us of our feeling that expansion is not necessarily necessary everywhere. Beyond Eyes has provided substantiation for current and future housing issues and prevented further discussions and unnecessary costs. Incidentally, we are progressive when it comes to technology anyway: our center likes to apply the latest developments in the field of rehabilitation for better treatment of the patient. To this end we have our own innovation center, but we have also teamed up with Beyond Eyes; the sensor technology is a valuable addition. And although we analyze the data ourselves, their specialists are always ready to support us with questions or uncertainties. ”
